Quote:
Aephanemer is a one-man melodic death metal band formed in 2013 by Martin Hamiche.

Aephanemer is a merge of the two French words "éphémère" (ephemeral), and "fânée" (folded)

These two words are related to the autumn season.

Know Thyself (2014)

Quote:
There is a French fellow on YouTube who has accumulated a modest amount of views for his simple, yet catchy, melodic guitar performances. He goes by simply Nif, and Aephanemer is his new band, with its first EP poetically titled Know Yourself. Still in the start-up phases, Aephanemer is a one-man project, and so drums are programmed and there are, unfortunately, no vocals. I did think to myself “Any second now I’ll hear some epic, operatic, alpha-male wailing, some tortured demonic screams, or the lamentations of a solemn angel.”

Nope. This is an instrumental symphonic metal band, so far, and a pretty damn good one. I’m fairly critical of instrumental metal because it tends to lack enjoyable songwriting and is more like an exercise in technicality. Most instrumental guitarists just wank all over the place, playing as many notes as possible without a single memorable moment, and I personally think a vocalist is necessary 99% of the time. Which is why you can take me seriously when I say Know Yourself is perfectly listenable without one. Aephanemer is more like a symphony, in that the guitars and keyboards weave in and out, shifting the melodic focus and your attention – there is generally no one “lead” part. The music is beautiful and powerful, albeit surprisingly simplistic. Don’t expect anything too exotic. Nif certainly stays in the realms of western harmony and such. Every song stays in a moderate tempo, and my power metal side was certainly lusting for some double time and blast beats. In fact, the lack of a real drummer really does take away from what I am sure the sensation could have been; the very orderly melodies would benefit from an organic chaotic rhythm section.

Several melodies make you say, “Wow, this guy can write!” The emphasis is on a lead guitar and lead keyboard, the entire ensemble with accompanying strings and rhythm guitar is just as dense as it needs to be without anything blurring together. I do wish there were more stand-out moments, however. While the songs are by no means randomly composed, I didnt exactly remember one song and one part together. And it surprises me that, for a guitarist with such great music, he definitely would benefit from some melodies to which one can sing-a-long. Speaking of daring, the album closes with a rather campy piano piece that sounds like a old video game soundtrack, which is actually cool, for what it is. As far as I am concerned, this is a bonus track.

I think it is fair to say that many of us long-haired, quick-fingered musicians aspire to something greater than impressing ourselves and the handful of friends who consistently come to local shows. Yet the stories behind are often tragic, with leaps of faith ending in a bloodied and tear-filled mess on the concrete. I get the sense that Nif wrote much of this album in the hopes of inspiring courage in us and himself. It is a challenge to create something from nothing and then hope people give a shit, but Nif has done that even if on a relatively small scale. If this EP is any indication, I think he can continue to do so.

Hallmark moment over – Check out Aephanemer.
