Word 2010 adds powerful safety features that you'll either find annoying or reassuring, depending on the kind of people with whom you share documents. If you sometimes open documents downloaded from web sites, you may be grateful for the new safety feature that spreads a colored banner at the top of any downloaded document that you open, and requires you to click a button before Word unlocks the file for editing. A similar banner appears when you open documents created in older versions of Word that have macros included in the file, because these have the potential to harm your system.

Other welcome features include a button that lets you capture any region of your screen and paste the image directly into a Word document—a procedure that used to require side-trips to separate software for capturing and editing screenshots.

Frustratingly enough, Word still doesn't let you store printing options (like duplex printing) inside a document, so you'll need to remember to select duplex printing every time you print that file. Microsoft clearly knows how to store printing options with a document—Publisher has exactly that capability built-in—and it's incomprehensible why they haven't built this into Word.

Word, like Excel, is a colossus that dominates its market, and even the rise of cloud-based services like Google Docs can't make a serious dent in Word's dominance. Google Docs can't begin to handle complex documents, cross-references, endnotes, and other advanced features, though it gets the job done for simple documents. The word-processor in the freeware OpenOffice.org is a Word workalike that has many of Word's faults and lacks much of its power. Unfortunately, once you get past the basics in Word, Microsoft's word processor can be maddeningly complex and obscure, partly because it's still a confusing mix of clumsy and arcane technology that dates back ten or twenty years and sleek modern technology that's been grafted on top of the older bits. Almost all the time I spend helping other people solve computer problems is spent helping them sort out problems caused by the complexities of Word. (Corel's venerable Corel WordPerfect X5 is a lot more straightforward, but distinctly a minority taste.) For better or worse, Word is far ahead of everything else, but I can't stop myself from wishing that Microsoft would rewrite it from the ground up as the coherent, modern app that a word processor ought to be.
