The Strain riprende il tema apocalittico e lo mescola sapientemente al genere horror creando una serie che negli Stati Uniti è diventata subito cult. Nata dalle menti di Guillermo del Toro e Chuck Hogan, racconta la storia di un mondo minacciato e di un gruppo di uomini e donne che si ritrovano senza volerlo a diventare gli unici in grado di salvare la razza umana. La serie inizia quando un aereo con le luci spente e il portellone sigillato atterra allâ™aeroporto internazionale di New York City. Il Dott. Ephraim Goodweather, epidemiologo a capo del locale Centro Controllo Malattie, e il suo team giungono sul posto per indagare sullâ™accaduto, ma si rendono rapidamente conto di avere a che fare con una misteriosa epidemia virale tanto antica quanto letale: il vampirismo. Mentre la situazione intorno a loro degenera, Eph e suoi uniscono le forze a un gruppo di volontari per combattere la minaccia, salvare la città e con essa lâ™umanità intera. The Strain, che vanta tra i produttori esecutivi il co-creatore di "Lost" Carlton Cuse, si basa sul romanzo "La progenie", scritto dagli stessi Guillermo del Toro e Chuck Hogan. Ha debuttato il 13 luglio 2014 sul canale FX e il primo episodio è stato diretto da del Toro in persona che ha anche firmato la sceneggiatura insieme a Hogan.
