I was fortunate enough to have been handed this cd as a sample 5 years ago and I've played it weekly ever since. Just about every one of life's questions is addressed in GROW. Hurricane guitars, precise baselines and Rory McCarron's absolute command of percussion leave absolutely nothing to be improved upon.... Christian's lyrics and phrasing deserve a volume unto themselves; frustration and fierceness revealed in "Skydiver" and "Big Big City" to the ability to be both gentle and sardonic in "New Year Dawning", the searing hope of "Run".... Little wonder I listen to it as often as I do. Schtum performed as a co-headliner with Ruby when they passed through Minneapolis, MN in March of '95. Despite having only a few dozen devotees on the floor of 1st Avenue's mainroom, they blew the roof off the place and made Ruby's performance long and uninspired in comparison. I was able to meet the guys that night, had drinks with them and never forgot them. It's too bad they didn't stick around to give us some more music, but the flash of light from GROW makes the world more beautiful every time I listen. Thanks, Derry. Thanks, Schtum.
