La serie è incentrata sul personaggio di Hank Moody, affermato scrittore newyorkese in piena crisi creativa ed esistenziale che, trasferitosi nell'odiata Los Angeles per seguire la trasposizione cinematografica del suo romanzo nichilista God hates us all (Dio ci odia tutti), trasformato in una melensa commedia romantica intitolata A crazy little thing called love con "Tom e Katie", deve tentare di ritrovare il suo talento, sistemare il rapporto con la ex compagna Karen, di cui è ancora innamorato, ed essere un padre presente per la figlia adolescente Rebecca ("Becca"). Sfoga tutta la sua rabbia e frustrazione nel sesso compulsivo, concedendosi continue avventure di una notte, nell'alcool e nella scrittura (per quanto lui non la consideri tale) di un blog per "Hell-A. Magazine".
