Information about album:
In their neverending quest to cleverly box up their past, Trojan now offers a three-CD set of '60s reggae covers of '60s hits. Just the kind of thing that sends many reggae fans running for cover, appalled at the idea of all those saccharine hits redone "island style." The first disc's track list is particularly off-putting, culling most tracks from the poppier side of the pop chart. But just listen to Ernest Wilson and Freddie McGregor's striking take on "Just Once in My Life," Tomorrow Children's intense "Bang! Bang!," and Hopetone Lewis & co.'s gospel styled "The Mighty Quinn." And don't miss Lloyd Charmers' astonishing psychedelic organ solo on "Crimson and Clover," then check out his sweet vocals on "Come See About Me" on disc two. That latter disc is dedicated to Tamla/Motown covers, and is flush with stellar vocal tracks. Top picks include the Techniques, the Clarendonians, Derrick Harriott, the Sensations, and Slim Smith on his own and with the Uniques, but there isn't a less then splendid number here. Disc three is odds and sods, with former Technique Pat Kelly stealing the show, ex-Paragon Bob Andy running him a close second, and a teenaged Dawn Penn exhibiting astounding talent. However, the bulk of this disc is given over to instrumentals, with a clutch featuring ex-Skatalites saxophonists. From the suave Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, to the glorious Lynn Taitt & the Jets (their track with Gladdy Anderson is magnificent), to the irrepressible Boris Gardiner funking up the house with his utterly amazing take on "Spooky," the bands are sensational. And although there are a few clunkers within, and some of the tracks were obviously taken from scratchy vinyl, regardless, this is one fabulous set, turning even the most hackneyed '60s number into something very special indeed.
