Exhaustive fifty-eight track trawl through the first year, both “A” and “B” sides, of releases on Emile Shalitâ™s legendary Bluebeat label. Shalit created the label in 1960 to issue the “blues beat” music that was beginning to emanate from Jamaicaâ™s burgeoning music business and became so successful that some fans, even today, call the Jamaican music of the sixties Bluebeat. Still too early for Ska proper, this is nevertheless an essential collection of for the most part previously unavailable music documenting the earliest Jamaican sides that found favour in the UK. Featuring artists such as the inevitable Laurel Aitken and Derrick Morgan, Byron Lee, Jiving Juniors – featuring a young Derrick Harriott, Owen Gray, Keith & Enid, Clue J & His Bluesblasters, Theophilius Beckford, Alton Ellis and Higgs & Wilson. Wonderful music accompanied by a thoroughly researched booklet courtesy enthusiast Phil Etgart and compiled by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.
