Episode 1 - Welcome to Briacliff
2012[2]
A man (Leo) and his wife (Teresa) explore the abandoned Briarcliff Asylum, recounting the history of the dilapidated ruins. They hear a noise during a sexual encounter and follow it. Leo points an iPhone through a slot to get an image of what is there. Teresa fellates him as a motivation. After some movement, whatever is on the other side rips off his arm.
1964
A family on a road trip gets a fill-up from a full service fuel station attended by Kit. His friends, including Billy, want him to scare someone with his boss' gun (their target is a Black man, who purportedly made a pass at a White woman). Kit declines, and his friends engage in racist innuendo regarding his "maid". He heads home to his wife Alma instead. Their interracial marriage is secret, as their families and community would not approve. After a bout of lovemaking, Alma goes to make dinner. Mysterious lights prompt Kit to run outside, thinking it is more shenanigans from Billy. Instead, Kit finds that the blinding lights are coming from the sky. He hears Alma inside calling for help, when suddenly an extremely loud sound booms, breaking windows and silencing Kit's screams. When it ends, Kit looks around, worried, and spots items in his house levitating to the ceiling. Suddenly, he is lifted to the ceiling, as the light and sounds return.
Lana Winters is doing a story on Briarcliff's bakery. She encounters a freakish microcephalic woman named Pepper in the yard. She is informed by Sister Mary Eunice that Pepper drowned her sister's baby and sliced his ears off. Shelly is having her head shaven by Sister Jude, likely punishment for sexual misconduct. Sister Jude does not believe in mental illness, thinking it just an excuse for sin, and also believes Shelley is "a victim of her own lust".
Sister Mary Eunice rushes in to warn Sister Jude that Bloody Face is arriving. It is Kit, who is processed and sedated. He is there to determine his fitness to stand trial. He tries to tell Sister Jude of his strange encounter, believing he was abducted by aliens, but she will have none of it. She insults Alma, prompting his spitting on her. She comments that he should not have done that, and breaks out a cane for punishment.
Kit encounters many residents in the common room, including Grace, who warns him not to turn off the annoying music in the room, and Shelley (who sexually harasses him). Spivey, a greaser, picks a fight with Kit, making racist comments and calling him Bloody Face. Kit gets into a physical altercation with him that is interrupted by Sister Jude via a loud whistle. Sister Jude has Kit hauled away to solitary confinement.
Dr Arden is mutating plants with gamma rays. He and Sister Jude are butting heads about missing patients, who Arden claims are dead and cremated. These missing patients have no families, which the Sister finds curious.
Grace visits Kit in solitary. She brings him a sense of comfort, and offers him a drag of her cigarette. He asks what she did to get in the asylum, and she says that "They say I chopped up my family". Kit asks if this is true, and she insists that it is not. She leaves when she hears footsteps, but promises she will return.
Lana dines with her lover Wendy (a 3rd grade science teacher), who is getting high before dinner. Lana aspires to win a high profile article, but her boss (Emmerman) wants her to stick to the cooking column.
Sr. Jude prays as she cooks dinner. She is wearing red lingerie and touches her body with her perfume-sprayed hand. Later she and Monsignor Howard have dinner together. She asks where he found Arden, and he rebuffs her concerns about him. He insists that science and faith can co-exist under their roof and that she can be Mother Superior in his new order, as he aspires to be Pope. She fantasizes about mounting him at the table as he urges her to let Arden do as he will.
Arden and Sr. Mary Eunice discuss a presence in the woods, and she takes out food (raw meat) to them. She encounters Lana, and warns her that they must leave quickly. Lana hears something that she believes is some kind of animal.
Arden takes a special interest in Kit, entering his room.
2012
Teresa rushes to get help for Leo. She tries to retrieve his phone from the car (hers is on the other side of a locked door, along with Leo's arm) and finds the front door to the ruined asylum locked. She runs to find an alternate route through a hidden tunnel.
1964
Lana and Sr. Mary Eunice escape through hidden tunnels, and Lana negotiates for free reign of the asylum to find Bloody Face. She encounters Spivey, who throws his feces at Sr. Mary Eunice, who rushes to the powder room in tears. She then runs into Shelley, who is fellating an orderly. Shelley tells Lana that Kit was sent to solitary, and moments later an angry Sr. Jude patrols the ward, nearly catching Lana. Lana finds a solitary cell and hides within. A bloody arm from inside knocks her unconscious.
Arden explains that despite Sr. Jude's disapproval and authority, that his science will prevail. He experiments on Kit, sans anesthetic. He wants to directly examine Kit's brain, and asks him about his killing methodology. As Kit is probed (including electrical stimulation and eye clamps), he recalls his abduction experience. Arden removes a mechanical-looking implant from Kit's neck, which unfolds legs and scurries away.
Sr. Jude scolds Sr. Mary for allowing Lana into the asylum, and grabs her paddle to punish her. A sobbing Sr. Mary insists that the cane is not big enough for the sins she has committed, and brings her a much larger one. She begs Sr. Jude to punish her as she lifts her habit and bares her bottom, but Sr. Jude orders her away, saying she does not have time for her.
Sr. Jude visits Wendy and intimidates her into not fighting Lana's commitment by threatening to reveal their "inversion". The asylum has restrained her during her trespassing and will be "treating" her for her disorder.
Arden is cleaning an closed solitary cell (in which Leo's arm lies in the present), where he is discovered by Sr. Jude. Something has been living in it, but Arden denies such.
2012
Teresa continues running for help (down the same tunnel from which Lana arrived in the past), and encounters Bloody Face, wearing a skin mask.
Episode 2 - Tricks And Treats
2012 The episode picks up where the last left off, with Teresa encountering Bloody Face. He chases her to the main hall, where she tries to save Leo, but ends up going into the room where her husband's arm was ripped off, and watches through the door as Bloody Face repeatedly stabs Leo. Bloody Face beats on the door, as we flash back to 1964.
1964
Wendy is crying to her friends over the blackmail on the night before Halloween. She takes a shower and makes the mistake of leaving the window open. She is confronted by Bloody Face, who presumably kills her. Back at the asylum, Sister Jude is doing room checks. A list of grievances is confiscated from Lana's cell. Sister Jude wants to erase Lana's memory, and has Dr. Arden perform electric shock therapy on her. Later, Dr. Thredson arrives and speaks with Kit. Kit insists that he is not crazy, and Alma truly was abducted, but Dr. Thredson diagnoses him as a manipulative, with acute clinical insanity. In the woods, Dr. Arden and Sister Mary Eunice go to feed the creatures of the woods, and Sr. Mary asks what they are. Dr. Arden tells her he will let her know in good time, and kindly offers her a candy apple, which she is reluctant to take, but ends up taking a bite. Lana has brief memories of the electric shock therapy, but alas she remembers everything. Lana overhears Kit and Grace planning to escape. Dr Thredson has a talk with Sr. Jude, and expresses his belief that the asylum is barbaric in its treatment methods. Sr. Jude has a chat with a concerned family, and Dr. Thredson interrupts. The family informs them their son, Jed, has begun hearing voices and seeing things that aren't there, and ate the heart of one of their farm animals. They express belief that he may be possessed by a demon. They go to see Jed in his room, his body completely twisted. He cries that he is scared and does not know where he is before speaking his horrific language.
Shelley approaches Dr. Arden and offers sexual favors in exchange for time outside. He refuses her advances calling her a whore. Later at home he solicits the services of a prostitute who while fulfilling his request to don a nun's habit finds some damning BDSM photos which include severely bruised, tortured and possibly dead women. Fearing for her life she bites his arm and knees his groin to make her escape.
Back at the asylum Lana tells Grace of the tunnel she used to enter the manor by and plans an escape but insists she must not tell Kit. The Monsignor and visiting priest Father Malachi perform an exorcism on Jed with the church mandated presence of Dr. Thredson. Lights flicker, pseudo-Latin is spoken and objects and bodies are flung across the room. Jed, with seemingly omniscient knowledge, confronts Sister Jude on a past that includes drunken promiscuity and manslaughter. He mocks Jude, saying "You're a murderer Judy!!", causing her to snap and attack him. The Monsignor comes in and breaks her away from Jed, who seems to be even more enraged.
In the mayhem that apparently results from the demons rage all the locked cells open and Lana takes advantage of the opportunity to escape with Grace. Kit catches up to them and after Lana refuses to include him Grace and he go off on their own. Lana screams for the guards that Kit is escaping, and He and Grace are captured. Lana looks on in tears, feeling guilty for having Grace caught.
Jed's rage continues and Dr. Thredson administers a sedative. It has no effect and Jed enters cardiac arrest and grows still. Dr. Thredson makes an attempt at CPR before pronouncing him dead. There is a final flickering of light behind Sister Mary at the door and she faints, appearing to be knocked backwards by an unseen force.
Dr. Arden, having heard of Mary's fainting, goes to check on her. She is asleep on a cot with blankets thrown off and wearing only a nightshirt. Though clearly tempted by her exposed body he attempts to protect her modesty by adjusting her gown causing her to wake. He expresses concern for her well being but still glimpsing a hint of her breasts through her shirt he turns away explaining that it is dismaying to see her out of costume. She pulls the blankets to her chin and apologizes telling him she feels comfortable with him. As he leaves the room she lies back down and forcefully throws the blankets off. A crucifix on the wall shakes.
Sister Jude praises Lana for sacrificing her own freedom to stop Kit. She tells her she gets a reward, inviting Kit and Grace into the office and allowing Lana to pick the cane with which they are to be punished. Before the Sister can proceed Kit tells Grace to stand up and takes the entire blame on himself. Jude accepts this but doubles Kit's punishment to 40 lashes.
Episode 3 - Nor' Easter
2012
Bloody Face invades the cell that Teresa is cowering in, and Leo rallies to attack him, managing to wrestle the orbitoclast away and stab him in the chest whereupon Teresa takes it up and makes certain the job is done. As they make their escape they encounter a second Bloody Face then a third from behind who puts a bullet in each of their heads. The two remove their masks to reveal that they are brothers, Devon and Cooper. It was their friend Joey who was killed by the newlyweds, they begin wondering what could have taken Leo's arm as they are surprised by the entrance of a fourth Bloody Face.
1964
Sr. Mary Eunice brings the mail to Sr. Jude, including a newspaper dated 1949 referencing missing Framingham resident Missy Stone, shown in a photograph to be Sr. Jude's hit-and-run victim. Distraught to the point of paranoia, she is kneading bread when Dr. Thredson asks her about Jed's autopsy and she begins accusing him of planting the newspaper and gives him two weeks notice to clear out his office.
Dr. Arden is trying to examine the microchip from Kit's neck, which reassembles itself.
Sr. Mary Eunice informs the residents of the upcoming storm and the plans to comfort them with a showing of Cecil B. DeMille's The Sign of the Cross. Sr. Mary Eunice seems to taunt Sr. Jude with Communion wine and lipstick to which she attributes to Dr. Arden. The Mexican, having recognized the change in Sr. Mary Eunice, is praying in her cell when the nun enters and bids her to pray, then stabs her with scissors before wheeling her out to the woods as dinner for Dr. Arden's creatures.
Sr. Mary Eunice meets with Arden, telling him that the creatures are getting hungrier, and wondering what will happen when winter comes. She taunts him regarding his desire for her and makes vulgar advances, thus snuffing his interest and he throws her out of the room.
Lana solicits the help of Thredson to pass a message to Wendy. He agrees, relishing the opportunity to supersede Sr. Jude's authority.
Grace and Shelley discuss another escape attempt. Shelley wants to flee to Paris, believing them more sexually liberated and tolerant.
Arden cleans his office and dresses a sofa to ride out the storm. Sr. Jude confronts him about the forbidden lipstick. Arden admits to admiring Sr. Mary Eunice's purity and innocence, but believes her corrupted by patients like Shelley. Sr. Jude disagrees, asserting that it is Arden's doing and again makes paranoid accusations about an attempt to usurp her. He suggests the elder nun take a leave of absence. She leaves to pray in her office, and the telephone rings. Her hit-and-run victim speaks to her from beyond the grave. Sr. Jude apologizes, and seeing the girl's broken spectacles on the desk begins to weep. She breaks her sobriety by sampling the Communion wine and leaves her office to start the film for the residents. An orderly reports that The Mexican is missing from her cell. Sr. Jude introduces the "first inaugural" movie. She tries to calm the storm-frightened residents, but she is clearly shaken and breaks down while reciting the entirety of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone". She goes to find the missing inmate.
Thredson tells Lana that he has inquired after Wendy, finding that her door was open and Wendy absent. He expresses concern that Wendy's disappearance is the work of Bloody Face, despite the insistence of police that they have their man. Grace and Shelley, with the addition of Kit, take the opportunity to attempt their escape. Lana attempts to follow but after her betrayal in the first attempt she must first convince Grace and the others to accept her. Shelley sacrifices herself to distract the patrolling orderly, only asking that if she is unable to join them that Lana blow the lid off the place. Sr. Jude catches a glimpse of the others as they continue on and pursues.
Arden continues to listen to the weather report while working, then "tarts up" a statue of the Virgin Mary with the lipstick before shouting "Whore!" and shoving it to the ground to shatter.
Shelley knocks Carl unconscious after aborting her fellatio, but while attempting to catch up to the rest she runs into Arden. Meanwhile, Sr. Jude's pursuit finds her face to face with one of Kit's alien acquaintances.
The escapees can wait no longer, and leave Shelley behind, exiting into the storm. Thredson notices their absence. Sr. Mary Eunice is enthralled by the film, anxious for the Christians to be eaten.
Arden takes Shelley to his office and he tries to anally rape her. She starts laughing at his unexpectedly small penis and Arden brains her with a blunt object.
The escapees find The Mexican being eaten by the mutated creatures outside, and are pursued by them back to the tunnel.
Sr. Mary Eunice wakes Sr. Jude from her drunken stupor and tells her of the escape. Sr. Jude puts an early end to movie night and all other future privileges due to the three escapees, who she mistakenly believes to be Shelley, The Mexican, and Pepper, as the others have returned with muddy shoes to their seats. Shelley awakens on Arden's examination table and learns that everyone else believes she escaped and that the doctor has amputated her legs above the knee.
Episode 4 - I Am Anne Frank Pt.1
Frank escorts Sister Jude to the cell of an unidentified woman who was brought to the asylum after she was arrested for assault. Sr. Jude learns that the newcomer was enraged by an off-hand anti-Semitic remark. Upon further questioning she defiantly begins whistling a tune.
Meanwhile, Arden continues his experiments on Shelley, including an injection of something he says might make her live forever.
Grace and Kit discuss his latest probing by Arden who is desperately searching, with the aid of X-rays, for the missing micro-bot. Grace shares her story at Kit's urging.
She awoke in the night to a home invader who axed apart her father and step-mother and she discovered the dismembered parts in a closet when she tried to hide. Her step-sister accused her of their deaths.
Lana is questioned by Thredson about her whereabouts during the movie, since he knows that she, Grace, and Kit tried to escape. She recalls Kit's warning not to tell anyone about the dead inmate. Thredson thinks Lana shouldn't be with the rest of them, and he offers to treat her homosexuality in hopes that she can be released. She insists that there is no treatment.
In the common room, the unidentified woman writes on a sheet of paper[1] to one Kitty[2] regarding her stay. Lana warns her to hide her pen, or risk solitary. Arden enters, and she recognizes him as a doctor from Auschwitz. She attacks Arden and as she is hauled away claims that she is Anne Frank.
Sister Jude questions the woman's claims. "Anne" says that her savior was an American soldier, who widowed her during reemployment in the Korean War. She concealed her identity to inspire others as a martyr.
Thredson reveals that he thinks Kit is neither guilty nor insane, and is willing to lie to save him, under the condition that he stops deluding himself of the trauma induced abduction fantasy. Thredson believes that Kit killed a librarian (Donna Burton, January 16th) and a secretary (Allison Rydell, March). On the night of Billy's confrontation at the garage he killed Alma out of societal guilt and created the abduction fantasy as an overlay.
Anne reveals that Arden is Hans Gruper, an SS doctor that seemed gentle at Auschwitz, bribing women and children with sweets. With a coin toss, he would "save" women, who would come back sick, if at all.
In the med line, Lana fantasizes about being rewarded by Columbia University for her six-part expose' on the atrocities of the asylum. In her speech she credits the other inmates for their inspiration and says that she did what she had to do to get out. She consents to aversion therapy.
Kit wonders if he made up his abduction experience. Grace tries to convince him of his sanity. Grace doesn't care if he's a killer, and they have sex on the kitchen counter, where they are discovered by Frank(?).
Sister Mary Eunice chooses a cane from Sr Jude's closet. The elder nun is impressed by the improvement in her demeanor. Grace wants to get the caning over with, but Sr Jude intends to sterilize them. The two are separated, and Sr Mary Eunice leaves Grace's file for Kit to read.
Detectives Byers and Connors of the Wasaugee Homicide Squad are questioning Arden about his assault on the prostitute. They mention that she found Nazi memorabilia and bondage porn. After Arden leaves in disgust, they also question Kit's surgical skill in being able to skin and decapitate.
Thredson is administering an emetic to associate nausea with lesbian imagery and a patient, Daniel, will be a male heterosexual positive role model for her. Thredson engages Lana to masturbate at the visual and physical stimulation of Daniel's genitals. She is nauseated again, and Thredson knows that aversion / conversion will not work with her.
Sister Jude relates the mounting evidence of Arden's Nazi past to Msgr Howard. He dismisses her vendetta against Arden, including her trust of Anne's story. He also says he knows she's been drinking. He urges her to pray and reflect. In Arden's lab, where Shelley struggles, Howard calls and tips Arden off that they are on to him and that he should get his affairs in order.
Sister Jude tells her Mother Superior that she has slipped off the wagon as they stroll through the woods. She also relates that she thinks Arden is a war criminal. The Mother Superior suggests that Sr Jude go over the Monsignor's head, but Sr Jude will have none.
Sister Mary Eunice and Carl lead Kit to a cell across from Grace. They haven't castrated him yet. He confronts her about her file. Grace was molested by her father, and she killed her step-mother for trying to keep her quiet as well as her father.
Lana is visited by Thredson in the day room. He couldn't sleep, and was sorry that he tried the controversial therapy. He brings her a photograph of Wendy. He swears he will leave with Lana at the end of the week.
Kit asks for a confession with Sr Jude. He says, as God knows all, that He knows if he killed Alma. Kit himself doesn't know, but thinks he must have. He wants to be forgiven, and will confess any and everything he's done.
Anne is trapped with Arden in a lab. Anne pulls a gun which she secretly received from the police on Arden, and she shoots him in the leg. He throws her the key, and she finds Shelley on the other side of the door, begging Anne to kill her.
Episode 5 - I Am Anne Frank Pt.2
1964 Sister Jude, in civilian garb, meets Sam Goodman, a Nazi hunter and Holocaust survivor. at Mother Claudia's recommendation. She gives him Arden's personnel file as he explains how false records can be made. He urges her to stay away from Arden, lest he grow suspicious.
Anne is still holding Arden at gunpoint when Sister Mary Eunice and Frank intervene. She is sedated. As she comes to, she is questioned by Sr. Jude, who explains that Arden was rushed to the hospital and that she and Frank searched Arden's lab, but did not find the legless creature that Anne claimed to see there.
Anne's husband arrives at Briarcliff and informs Sr. Jude that her real name is Charlotte Cohen Brown. He explains that his wife is "high-strung" and obsessed with Anne Frank after seeing a play about her life. After the birth of her son David, she tattooed her own arm and made a wall of Nazi-related memorabilia in the den. Thredson appears and casually diagnoses Anne with post-partum psychosis. Sr. Jude allows her to be released to her husband, but the woman claims not to know him and insists that she is Anne Frank, but a family photo snaps her to reality. Thredson believes Sr Jude is making a mistake by releasing the woman, and further berates her for authorizing sterilization of Kit and Grace.
Grace and Kit speak through the wall separating their cell, vividly imagining that they are together. Sr. Mary Eunice releases Kit from solitary in time for dinner, saying Sr. Jude changed her mind about his procedure. Grace thinks she is similarly reprieved, but the nun tells her she will still be going under the knife in the morning. After loudly protesting until she becomes tired, Grace is awoken by the loud rattling of her cell door. A bright and unearthly light shines into Grace's cell under the door, reflecting in her eye.
It's medication time in the day room. Lana is interrupted by Thredson, who tells her that they will be leaving together after dinner and to meet him at the staircase. He visits Kit, who sets up a reel to reel recorder to record and play back his recollections, effectively confessing to the murder of his wife.
In "the light", Grace encounters a naked and pregnant Alma before she is probed by an extraterrestrial.
Arden is upset about the snooping into his lab while he was injured, and that Sr. Jude sent Charlotte home after injuring him. He wants the nun to beg for forgiveness. When she refuses, he says he will demand that Mnsgr. Howard fire her. He leaves to dress his wound and Sr. Mary Eunice offers her assistance. She explains that she has removed Shelley from the lab. Sr. Mary Eunice hints that Arden's position of authority in the asylum in the absence of Sr. Jude would require a "strong right hand".
In a schoolyard nearby, a small girl runs screaming from "a monster" she sees in a stairwell: Shelley, having somehow made a long crawl from the woods.
Charlotte's husband returns her to the asylum, fearing to leave her alone with their son. He apologizes to Arden for her shooting him, but wants Thredson to treat her. Sr Jude says that he is welcome to try to consult with him, and sends Frank to find the young doctor, who escapes successfully with Lana. He tells Frank to relay that he doesn't actually work there, and never did.
Frank informs Sr Jude that Lana is missing, off grounds. She laments her role, and that she must leave it. She takes off her habit in her cell, and goes to a bar in civilian garb, there being offered a drink by a nearby drinker.
Arden, with her husband's consent, lobotomizes Charlotte.
Thredson takes Lana to his home, saying they will see the police in the morning. She telephones her friend Lois, but Thredson stops her. Sharing a cup of wine with her, he anticipates she will win a Pulitzer - for telling his story. She doesn't realize immediately what that means, but after she catches on that his home is subtly decorated with human body parts. An exploration of his home uncovers his "furniture making" workshop, where he processes human skin and bones. He drops her through a trapdoor.
In the day room, Kit notices Grace bleeding vaginally. He tries to get help, but is interrupted by the police who are armed with Kit's taped murder confession. Grace, startled out of her trance-like state by the arrest, screams to Kit that he is not insane and that she has seen his wife Alma.
Lana wakes up, chained to the floor in Thredson's hidden workshop. She is horrified to discover Wendy's corpse, thawing on the floor beside her. Thredson appears and says that Lana is to continue "therapy" with him by kissing Wendy's frozen body. He explains that he has removed the teeth, allegedly so as to soften the experience, and dons a mask that displays them. The mask clearly displays his long-hidden secret identity: he is the original Bloody Face, and possibly responsible for the murders Kit is accused of.
Sr Jude awakens and dresses after sleeping with the man who had bought her a drink the night before, carefully making sure not to wake him.
Charlotte, now an adoring pliant housewife and doting mother, seems happier than ever. Though she has begun to pack away her wall of Holocaust photographs and articles, one picture still hung there reveals a familiarly sinister face amongst the officers surrounding Hitler; a young Arthur Arden, a.k.a. Hans Gruper.
Episode 6 - The Origins of Monstrosity
2012
A 911 caller tells the dispatcher to send police to Briarcliff. He implies that he is the real Bloody Face and that those killed were imposters. The police arrive to find Devon, Cooper, and Joey strung by cables to the ceiling and staircase rails.
1964
The mother of Jenny Reynolds brings her to Briarcliff and tells Sr. Jude of her belief that her daughter killed one of her friends while playing in the woods, stabbing her with a pair of scissors despite Jenny telling the police that it was a bearded man with a brown jacket.
Lana awakes in Thredson's playroom, where she's been placed in a bed surrounded by personal effects from her home. At first she doesn't realize she is not back home but Thredson's voice wakes her. He is cooking her croque-monsieur with nutmeg and tomato soup, what he calls the "perfect mommy snack". He explains that he grew up in the system, untouched and unloved, abandoned by his own mother. She compliments the food and expresses appreciation for this act of kindness. She felt abandoned at Briarcliff and she sympathizes. He says he was right about her, that she is "the one".
He tells her of his time in medical school and his epiphany when seeing the cadaver of "his mother". He knew it wasn't really her, but he used the cadaver as a surrogate for his touch hunger though he was dismayed over the the smell of formaldehyde and the feel of the cold skin. He needed a more lively subject. He describes abducting and skinning a live woman (Donna Burton, the first murder attributed to Bloody Face) but when Lana recoils he comforts her and explains that she is his new "mommy".
Sam Goodman, the Nazi hunter, calls Sr. Jude to tell her that Charlotte Brown was right after all about Arden, even if she was delusional. He will need a fingerprint. Sr. Jude ends the call and looks up to find Jenny who explains that she was left behind by her mother.
Msgr Howard is called to perform last rights for a tuberculosis patient. When he arrives, he recognizes it is in fact Shelley, covered in bodily and facial lesions.
1962
Father Howard tours the church's new acquisition, Briarcliff Tuberculosis Center. He meets its supervising physician, Arden. As they wheel out the body of an afflicted former nurse, Arden describes his research on an immunity boosting drug and germinates an agreement with the priest over acquisition of live testing subjects.
1964
Msgr. Howard strangles Shelley with a rosary to protect Arden and himself and, upon returning to the asylum, confronts the doctor about his monstrous abuse of her. Arden argues that his experimental subjects are the next stage in human evolution. He introduces his newest subject, Spivey, who Arden says can now survive a nuclear attack. The priest is disgusted and threatens to expose Arden's work, but Arden says that such disclosure will uncover all of Briarcliff's dark secrets, which gives the priest pause.
Sr. Mary Eunice is cutting herbs in the kitchen, observed by Jenny. The sister says that Jenny did kill Josie, but that Josie deserved it.
Young Mary Eunice McKee was humiliated at a pool party, pranked into being naked in public. All that she wanted was to be liked by people, but she was "just everyone's victim".
The sister offers to foster young Jenny, who she says has "authentic impulse". She lets spill some secrets about Sr Jude, and teaches Jenny to "defend herself".
The Monsignor enters Sr. Jude's office, and tells her that he has transferred her to a home for wayward girls in Pittsburgh. She blames Arden for orchestrating the situation, over Howard's insistence otherwise. He tells her to pack her things.
Sr Mary Eunice walks in on Sr Jude packing, and the elder explains the situation. She bids the younger nun to get cognac from the kitchen. Sr Mary Eunice eyes the red lingerie.
Kit calls Thredson from jail, his one phone call. Kit accuses Thredson of manipulating him into confessing, and Thredson says that Kit needs to live with the responsibilities of his actions. Thredson seems angry that Kit would lie with delusions of "little green men". While they speak, Lana files her chains trying to escape. Thredson is enraged at being called a liar and a bastard. He re-enters the playroom and sees Lana has been exerting herself. He strikes her and restrains her wrists. He is going to kill her for trying to abandon him, and gathers the Bloody Face mask and a scalpel, disappointed that people can't live up to expectations.
Sr Mary Eunice dances in red lingerie in the office. The phone rings, Sam calling. She answers in Sr. Jude's voice.
Sr Jude pours Arden a drink to celebrate his victory over her. He won't drink the toast alone. They both drink, he more than she.
The younger nun comes to the hotel to meet Sam. He asks if Sr Jude sent him, but she says that Sr Jude does not know she's there. Sr Jude later arrives with the now fingerprinted glass, but Sam has been slashed. With labored breaths, he says that it was a young nun.
Sr Mary Eunice comes back to Arden with Goodman's file on him. She has hidden part of it as insurance against him betraying her. He rages about having to hide this solitary life, but he questions her motives in protecting him. She says this is the beginning of a whole new era, and he should trust her with his soul and that everything will work out.
Jenny killed her brother, sister, and parents, and tells the police again that it was the bearded man in brown. As before, she has collected souvenirs.
Thredson admits that he was aware of Lana before her commitment. In flashback, he observes her saying to a crime reporter that she wanted to write about the origins of Kit's monstrosity. He is about to cut into her, and she says it is OK, as a mother's love is unconditional. He realizes his mistake, and takes the mask off. He begins to "nurse" her, "needing colostrum". She sobs.

The police investigate Briarcliff, tracing the car back to Leo Morrison. They identify his body and arm, but Teresa is missing. The iPhone rings (still held in Leo's rigored hand) and the voice on the other end tells Detective John Grayson that he only killed the imposters. Teresa is revealed to be on his playroom table.
Episode 7 - Dark Cousin
A pair of novice nuns enter Briarcliff's infirmary and one of them attends to Grace. She finds that Grace is suffering from intense fever and upon removing her blankets, discovers that she is hemorrhaging vaginally. They decide that Arden should not be called since rumor has it he is the one that performed the botched surgery. They try to revive Grace from fatal blood loss as she is visited by a veiled angel dressed in black. Grace tells the angel, "I'm ready," and the angel sprouts two large, black, feathered wings. Grace is resuscitated just as the angel is about to give her the "kiss of death" and the vision fades. She tells the nuns that they should have let her die.
Sister Mary Eunice enters Dr. Arden's study while he is testing plants. She informs him of Grace's near-death and blames Arden for Grace's condition. He denies his involvement and says that he performed no such surgery on her. He accuses her of being disrespectful of his authority and slaps her. Mary Eunice warns him against touching her again. Arden raises his hand to her and she telekinetically throws him across the room.
A nun in the kitchen is slicing bread. Behind her at a table sits Miles, an alcoholic man suffering from auditory hallucinations. The voices in his head taunt him with things like, "You know what you need to do," "Somebody's got to be the hero, so why not you?" "For once in your miserable life." He cries out, "Shut the Hell up!" to the voices and the nun stops slicing the bread. She scolds him and continues. His hallucinations continue until he mentions to the nun that his meat is not cut correctly and that there must be something wrong with the slicer. He offers to look at the machine and the nun backs away, allowing him to take a look. He rolls up his sleeves and proceeds to slice his own wrist with the blade of the slicer. Sister Mary Eunice comes to the scene and notices a strange word on the wall, written in Miles' blood. She informs the guards that it is a name in ancient Aramaic. She asks Miles how he knows the name and asks if he summoned "her". Miles does not know what she is talking about and is taken to a cell.
In the cell, the guards tell him not to touch his stitches. They leave and it is lights out in the Asylum. The dark angel appears in his cell and he begs to be let go. He undoes one of his bandages and pulls out the stitches, allowing for blood to pour from his arm. The angel kisses him and he dies, but the angel is aware of someone else in the room. It turns out to be Sister Mary Eunice, who tells the Angel that she is "just a simple nun". The angel knows that there is something darker about her and says she is like her but, "fallen". She calls her "cousin" and the nun denies this relation. The angel, who identifies herself as Shachath, speaks to Sr Mary Eunice's human side that has been overtaken and the host (the original sister) reacts by crying out, "Will you release me? Can you release me?" The parasite demon takes control again saying, "Oh Shut up, you stupid sow!" She looks at the angel and says, "She likes it here. We like it. And we have work left to do." "So do I," the angel replies, leaving Sister Mary Eunice alone.
Arden examines Grace and tells her of the accusations against him. He tells her that he is going to take care of her and that she will live, "if only to set the record straight." He injects her with an unknown medicine.
In the playroom, Thredson rapes Lana. She looks past him and sees Shachath in the shadows.
Kit meets with his lawyer, who tells him that even with testimony from Grace (who he says may not even make it to the trial because of her injuries), it is not likely many people would believe another patient from Briarcliff. He tells him that Dr. Thredson set him up, but unfortunately there is nothing he can do. A change comes over him and he starts to glance around the room while his lawyer speaks. He looks at the window and then at objects on the desk. He picks up a 3-hole-punch and attack his lawyer with it, knocking him to the ground and beating him.
Shachath visits Lana after Thedson has left. She offers Lana the kiss and Lana nearly submits to the temptation. She changes her mind and the angel leaves as Thredson comes back into the basement. He tells Lana that he is sorry for what he has done and that something had happened between them that he did not understand. He tells her that perhaps he should not have brought her there at all. Lana looks hopeful until he offers to either kill her by cutting her throat or strangling her. He says that it does not actually matter how he kills her and brings out a syringe. He says that she will be able to see Wendy again. Lana fights him by shattering a framed picture of Wendy over his head and overpowers him. She injects him with the syringe and he is momentarily knocked out. She retrieves the keys from his belt and unchains herself. As she runs up the stairs, Thredson gets up and tries to grab her. She pushes him back and he falls onto a table.
Once she is outside, she runs into the street. A car approaches her and Lana jumps inside, telling the driver to get away quickly. The driver asks Lana why she is running away and accuses her of being unfair to her boyfriend. Lana realizes that she is now in the car with another man who does not favor women. He tells her that his wife had cheated on him and lied to him and he had caught the two of them having sex in their own house. With that, he brings out a gun and Shachath appears in the backseat of the car. Lana looks back and says that she does not want to die, "not after everything". Shachath looks at the driver and the driver shoots himself. Lana tries to grab the wheel but the car crashes.
Lana awakens back in Briarcliff in a head-brace. Sister Mary Eunice is watching over her. She informs her that the driver was killed in the accident and that Lana had sustained injuries.
In his hotel room, Sister Jude is tending to a dying Sam Goodman. She attempts to call the police and whilst doing this, notices that there is a bottle of bourbon on the table. Meanwhile, the Angel comes to kiss the detective. Sister Jude turns to see that on the TV, there are newspaper clipping relating to the "girl in the blue dress". Underneath the paper is the word, "MURDERER" written in blood.
Flashback - 1949
A hungover Judy awakens in a trashed hotel room to Terry (one of her band members) knocking on her door. He comes to inform her that she has been replaced in the band as singer, since she missed their show the previous night. She attempts to seduce him into changing his mind but he denies her. As he leaves, he informs her that the police are going to come and question her about a hit-and-run case a few days prior. Judy panics and packs her things. She leaves and begins driving but decides to drink while she is on her way. She crashes her car and awakens in front of a statue of an angel. A nun approaches her car and asks if she is hurt.
1964
The phone rings in Sam's hotel room. It is Sister Mary Eunice who claims to be Sister Jude's "conscience". She taunts Sister Jude with accusations that she was the one who killed Sam, telling her that the police will think he was, in fact, investigating Sister Jude for the murder of the "girl in the blue dress". She advises that Sister Jude never return to Briarcliff and that she should start running. She tells Jude that she left her the bottle of bourbon as well as a straight razor.
In a diner, Sister Jude sits down but gets up to go to the restroom. She washes her hands and takes out the straight razor. She slits her left wrist and falls the floor. She is seen laying in a pool of blood. However, this turns out to simply be her imagination, for she walks out of the bathroom and sits across from Shachath.
She asks the angel why she was kept alive, despite prior suicide attempts. The angel tells her that she does not judge, but that Jude's "song" was different. Jude once tried to kill herself after her almost-husband left her the night before her wedding. She had apparently told him he had given her syphilis and that she could never have children. The angel tells Jude that "God had a plan" for her and that it was not yet time to die. Jude admits her failure in the eyes of God and says she is just a "drunken whore and a murderer." The angel tells Jude that "Peace is close". Jude replies, "I'm ready. Ready to do one last thing." A pair of the waitresses at the diner witness Jude talking to no one and decide that they should probably call Briarcliff, just so she can have a place to sleep.
Jude visits the family of the "girl in the blue coat". As they discuss the little girl, and as Jude is about to confess, a young woman in a nurse outfit enters the house. It turns out to be a grown Missy. Apparently, she was returned to her family with only a few broken bones. Jude reacts in a confused state and says that she prayed for Missy's soul ever since the accident. She recalls that the accident occurred around the time she decided to become a nun and that after it occurred, it inspired her to take her vows. Missy's mother informs Jude that her husband, Hank, had vowed to avenge what had happened to Missy, but it turns out that they accepted that whoever had left her there would suffer on their own.
A nun tries to give Lana medication but Lana argues that she must stay awake and talk to Sister Jude. Sister Mary Eunice enters and Lana informs her of what happened to her. She offers the truth that Kit is innocent and that Dr. Thredson is Bloody Face. Mary Eunice recalls the night of the exorcism and remembers the "Devil" saying to Thredson, "I love your work, Bloody Face." Lana begs Mary Eunice to call the police and she informs Lana that she believes her and that she is, at last, safe.
Sister Mary Eunice leaves Lana and converses with Frank, the guard, informing him that Lana is very confused and has claimed that Dr. Thredson attacked her and that Kit is innocent. Frank tells Mary Eunice that Kit escaped custody and that he is on the loose. The police have ordered that if he is apprehended, one should "shoot on sight".
Kit is seen in the Death Chute, having returned to Briarcliff by way of the secret exit close to the woods. One of the mutants has trailed Kit inside. A healthier Grace is in the kitchen. She tells a nun who is wondering why she is not in bed that she is "Dr. Arden's Little Miracle". The nun requests that Grace return to her room but Grace begs to stay. The nun agrees and leave the room. Kit appears behind Grace and the two embrace. Kit tells her that he is going to take her away, but as they leave, the nun returns and starts to cry for help. As she does, the creature attacks the nun and rips her throat out. He throws her body away and advances to Kit.

He pulls the hooked attachment from an industrial dough mixer and disembowels the monster. It lets out an inhuman scream and falls to the floor, dead. Frank enters and points a gun at Kit. Kit is unable to explain the situation and as Frank shoots, Grace jumps in front, catching the bullet in her chest. Kit is taken away as Grace lays on the kitchen floor, dying.
The Dark Angel appears to Grace and asks her is she is ready. Grace says, "Yes," and the Angel sprouts her dark wings. The Angel kisses her, and Grace says, "I'm free."
Episode 8 - Unholy Night
1962
A boy tells a bell-ringing Santa Claus that he wants a coonskin cap for Christmas. The Santa packs up for the night and is approached by a man who tells him to not disappoint the boy. When Santa gets short with the man, he is shot. The shooter, dressed in the bloody costume, enters a residence and kills a girl's parents when they cause him to lose his "Christmas spirit".
1963
The killer is known as Leigh Emerson and becomes a patient at Briarcliff. Sister Jude keeps him shackled, even for a group picture with the others, as she feels he is a danger both inside and outside the asylum. He proves her correct as he bites an orderly's nose and upper lip. Jude locks him in solitary confinement and canes him over the course of his stay.
1964
Sister Mary Eunice tries to be festive with the patients in the dayroom, but claims Sr. Jude has thrown away all the tree ornaments. Mary tells the patients to be creative as she improvises and decorates the tree with their belongings. In the laboratory, Frank prays over Grace's dead body and tells Dr. Arden they should report the recent events to the police. Arden asks if he wants them to know Frank killed an unarmed woman but Frank does not care.
In the office, Sr. Jude sneaks in and holds a straight razor to Sr. Mary's throat, threatening to end the demon's possession of her. Her telekinesis breaks Jude's hold and Dr. Arden is asked to escort Sr. Jude out of the building. He mentions Frank's intentions to confess and she promises to take care of it. She takes a Santa suit to Leigh, intent on lifting his spirits. She recites his criminal history, which began when he was arrested for shoplifting and sodomized in jail. She gives him the choice of being the victim or the victor.
Arden brings Mary a present of ruby earrings. She giddily takes them, even after he tells her of the jewelry's history. He took them from the feces of a wealthy "Jewess" in a concentration camp who hid them by ingesting them daily and eventually died. He hoped she would be appalled at the story but as she is not he learns how much she has changed. She calls him "pathetic" and warns that even God cannot help him.
Lana worries that Sr. Mary hasn't done anything about her claims regarding Dr. Thredson when she discovers Kit has returned to the asylum. He has been drugged and dreams of pregnant Alma who morphs into pregnant Grace. He apologizes for getting her killed and Lana wakes him from the dream. She explains to him that Dr. Thredson is the killer and she will prove Kit's innocence. He wants to help her but is too drugged to help at the moment.
Jude talks to Mother Claudia about the country forgetting the true meaning of Christmas. She thinks the Devil is the reason and vows to not let Sr. Mary be the next convert. Their meeting is interrupted with news that Dr. Arden wishes to meet with her. He admits to her that she was correct about Sr. Mary and needs her help. He vows loyalty to her if she can return Sr. Mary's innocence. He later lets Sr. Jude into the asylum through the kitchen entrance and she tells him she must speak to Sr. Mary alone in the office.
Monsignor Howard delivers a pointy handcrafted star from the Boston archdiocese to put on the asylum tree. He commends Mary for allowing Leigh to have a chance at redemption by allowing him to be unshackled and dressed as Santa. Leigh then knocks Frank down, slices his face with the star and attempts to stab him with it before orderlies tackle him. Arden arrives to tell Sr. Mary she has "pressing business" in the office.
Lana finds a phone but Thredson stops her while she is dialing. He tells her she has forced him to "kill" Bloody Face and destroy all evidence. He had planned on letting her talk to the police, as it would be the word of a mental patient against the word of a psychiatrist. She has, however, betrayed his trust and forced his intimacy and he prepares to strangle her with the phone wire. Kit enters with a fire extinguisher to knock Thredson unconscious. Lana wishes the doctor dead but Kit needs him alive to show who is the real killer. They stow him in a storage closet where Lana promises Thredson she will one day bury him.
Frank puts Leigh back in his solitary cell. Mary believes Frank has had trouble with Leigh and slices Frank's throat with the straight razor. She feigns worrying about a rampage as Leigh maniacally laughs. In the office, Sr. Jude prays for guidance and strength. The door opens and Leigh enters. When asked, he says he is there to open his "present." Sr. Mary locks the door from the outside and Arden affirms his loyalty to her. Arden leaves to take Grace's body in a cart down the death chute so his altered creatures can dispose of her. Along the way, he is stunned by a bright light, a deafening sound and fractured images of a strange being. He regains his senses to find an empty cart and a missing Grace. He has yet to reach the exit. In the office, Leigh reminds Sr. Jude of her cruelty to him by caning her across the desk. He intends on raping her but she stabs him in the neck with a letter opener.
Episode 9 - The Coat Hanger
2012
Johnny Morgan visits hypnotherapist Dr. Gardener in hopes of curbing his compulsive behavior. He tells her of a childhood spent skinning and killing cats, a predictor of psychopathy. As her discomfort grows he states his desire move on to skinning women and admits his first clumsy attempt with Teresa before revealing his true lineage as the son of Bloody Face. Later, the next patient arrives to find the doctor dead and a bloody-faced Johnny.
1964
Lana Winters is escorted to the office of Sr. Mary Eunice and is told that she is pregnant. She repeals her claim of rape against Dr. Thredson, saying that it must have been a delusion brought on by her concussion.
While Sr. Jude lies drugged and restrained in a cell an in-house trial is held regarding her sanity. Mnsgr. Howard and the Mother Superior speak truthfully of her seeming decline and Sr. Mary Eunice, Dr. Arden and Leigh Emerson give false testimony, framing her for the murder of Frank McCann. During the hearing, Leigh impresses both the judge and the monsignor with his seeming penitence. When Sr. Jude awakens the monsignor informs her that she has been found guilty of Frank's murder. She will spend the rest of her life as an inmate of Briarcliff, stripped of her position in the church; she is now merely Judy Martin again.
The Monsignor finds Mary Eunice packing Judy's belongings. She reveals her knowledge of Mnsgr. Howard's aspirations to the title of pope and states her desire to follow him to Rome.
Judy is tormented by two former subordinate nuns until the monsignor intervenes with Leigh in tow. He tells the defrocked nun that he forgives her.
Lana visits Kit Walker in the infirmary and states her desire to kill Oliver Thredson. He reminds her of his need to get Thredson's confession and clear his name. Lana goes to the still bound Thredson and tells him of her pregnancy and her intention to abort with a coat hanger. He begs her not to do it and promises to change. She gets him to speak of the murders of Donna Burton, Alison Rydell and Wendy Peyser as Kit records their conversation from hiding. After they reveal the ruse she tells Thredson that she's already gone through with the abortion.
As Kit hides the recording in the hydrotherapy room he is discovered by Dr. Arden who asks that he come to his office. There he admits belief in Kit's story of aliens. He shows Kit a casting of a three-toed footprint he found while investigating Grace's disappearance in the death chute and states his suspicion that aliens are targeting women he has impregnated. He plans, with or without his permission, to bring Kit to the brink of death in hopes that the beings will interfere. Willing to do anything to see Alma again, Kit agrees.
Carl thwarts Lana's attempt to secrete a knife from the kitchen. She resigns herself to improvising with the same hanger she used on her unborn child and goes to the room she has Thredson held. She discovers that he has escaped and while searching for him finds Sr. Mary instead. The possessed nun places her hand on Lana's belly and reveals that her child, a boy, still lives. As Lana smokes in the common room Judy enters and sits with her. Having grown to accept her renewed status as a civilian, she takes one of Lana's cigarettes, breaking her abstinence. She apologizes for her past crimes against Lana and promises to get her out; Lana, having lost her sense of trust and remembering similar promises made by Dr. Thredson, doesn't believe her. In a gesture intended to demonstrate her conviction to change, Judy smashes the "Dominique" record. In reply, Lana mutters "Hot damn", perhaps sarcastically.
In his laboratory, Dr. Arden injects Kit's heart with potassium chloride, promising to revive him within the 2-4-minute window given following his 'death'. The resultant slowing down of Kit's heart to a full stop is accompanied by the sights and sounds that have previously announced extraterrestrial arrival. Arden follows the light to a room where a very lucent Pepper looks after a naked, alive and very pregnant Grace. Pepper tells Arden that the baby has reached full term and that Grace will need a room. Meanwhile, lights and noise still surround Kit's prone body as Arden is distracted from reviving him.
Mnsgr. Howard baptizes Leigh in the chapel who thanks him before pushing the priests head beneath the water. A janitor later discovers the monsignor hanging from the chapel's crucifix. Shachath arrives to offer release.
Episode 10 - The Name Game
Arden pounds on Kit's chest to resucitate him, and wakes him. The doctor lies to him, though, claiming there was no visitation. He examines Grace, who has been healed of her bullet wounds. He interrogates Pepper, who has been charged with Grace's protection. Pepper says that Grace's womb has been protected from his examinations. Pepper also reveals that she was framed for drowning and mutilatting her baby neice. Pepper explains to Arden that, because she looks like a "freak", she was locked up forever. She has clearly been given significant intelligence by the beings that laugh at Arden's feeble (to them) experiments.
Shachath warns Mrs. Howard about Sr Mary Eunice's posession and how to prevent her from reading his thoughts with his rosary.
Sister Eunice announces a change in the dayroom, a new jukebox to replace the Dominique record. She plays "I Put A Spell on You" as a tribute to Briarcliff's newest prisoner, Judy Martin. Lana tries to talk to Kit, but Thredson enters the dayroom and sits with them. Thredson reveals the failed abortion to Kit, and a plan to continue to imprison Lana and Kit. Thredson has been hired full time as a therapist, after Sr Mary Eunice found and released him.
Lana is restrained by Carl and a guard from Sr Mary Eunice, who is conducting a room search. They haul her off to hydrotherapy, while Sr Mary Eunice finds a cucumber in Judy's room. The nun orders and administers electroshock therapy, while being taunted by the possessed nun, who intentionally adds extra current against Arden's orders.
Sr Mary Eunice tends Howard's wounds, and he surprises her by attempting an exorcism. She manages to stop him, and she retaliates by raping him, while he reiterates his vow of celibacy. She takes his virginity as a disgusted Arden watches from the doorway.
Judy distractedly enters the dayroom, observed by Lana and Kit. Jude tries to destroy the new jukebox, but is stopped by Lana. This prompts Judy to hallucinate a choreography of "The Name Game" with the dayroom residents.
Arden's afternoon feeding of the creatures is crashed by Sr Mary Eunice. He is repulsed by her actions. She wants to lobotomize Judy, and he refuses "because she wishes it". He kills the creatures with a revolver, saying the experiment is over. He tries to shoot himself in the head, but falters. She calls him pitiful and walks away.
Howard dismisses the others making bread in the kitchen but Judy, whom he still calls Jude. She notices his crucifiction wounds, even through her impaired mental faculty. He admits that he failed in his exorcism and laments that Sr Jude was right. He tries to get through to her for counsel, and stirs feelings and memories in her. She responds with the advice to "kill her" (Sr Mary Eunice).
Carl leads Thredson to Arden's office, where Thredson searches for sodium pentathol. He discovers Grace, giving birth, midwifed by Pepper.
Howard prays, where he is discovered by the posessed nun. She offers Round 2, but she realizes that he is trying for strength to kill her. She wonders aloud how he will kill her, which instead entices her. She intends to propel him towards papacy, appealing to his ambitions for power. He reiterates his intent to return her host to a state of grace, which angers the nun to the point of loss of control and the host emerges. He takes the opportunity to throw her from the balcony at the top of the staircase. When she hits bottom, Shachath kisses her.
Howard gives last rites to Sr Mary. Arden insists to cremate her himself.
Carl brings Kit for his session with Thredson; Grace and the baby are in Thredson's office. Thredson does not know about the alien intervention. Thredson searches for the confession tape, but Lana has hidden it and blackmails him with it.
Judy continues to try and recognize names of patients. She recognizes Mother Claudia, to whom Judy babbles about Mary Eunice and Rome, including the seduction. Judy tells Mother Superior that Lana doesn't belong there, and that she is falsly imprisoned, and bids the nun to help her.
In the crematory, Arden strokes the dead nun's hair before commmiting suicide by climbing onto the tray and incinerating himself along with Mary Eunice's body.
At the end, we hear Dr. Arden's screams of pain.
Episode 11 - Spilt Milk
2012
Johnny Morgan relaxes in his home (once the home of Dr. Thredson, his father), smoking from a hash pipe. Pandora, a postpartum prostitute, knocks on his door. He has prepared a hefty amount of cash in return for a specific service - his desire to suckle from her lactating breasts. To add to the sensation, she engages in an enticing conversation with him beforehand. In the midst of their foreplay, he whispers that he'd kill for the chance to suckle on her.
1965
Thredson and Carl guide Kit to a session with his baby from his cell in solitary. Pepper defends Grace and her baby from onlookers in the dayroom. Smiling, Grace tells Kit she intends to name the baby Thomas, after her grandfather. Thredson redirects Pepper to be taken for hydrotherapy. All the other patients leave the family alone in the dayroom, and Kit holds him. He asks Grace for answers from her disjointed memories.
She recalls implantation of a fetus that had developed outside her. She also remembers that despite their good intentions, the extraterrestrials make mistakes, including one involving Alma's death. She tells Kit that he is the link between the human and otherworldly life and that their baby is special and will change the way people think. He responds by asking Grace to marry him.
The Monsignor enters with a number of staff and Sister Collette, an elderly nun who intends to take the baby to St. Ursula's Home for Lost Children. Kit and Grace protest, since Thomas is not 'lost' but the Monsignor and Sister Collette point out that the child is not safe within an insane asylum with two patients as his parents. Carl restrains Kit while they take the baby away and Thredson says he will be able to help.
Sister Claudia, the Mother Superior, pulls Lana aside and tells her that she is being released along with her patient file as evidence. Mother Claudia wants her to write her exposé and dismantle Briarcliff. Before Lana exits, she retrieves the confession tape and thanks the catatonic Judy before leaving, promising to come back for her.
As the disguised Lana makes her way down Sr. Jude's "Stairway To Heaven", Thredson tries to convince Kit to get Lana to turn over the tape. Lana sees this and Kit - distracting Thredson - makes sure she overhears Thredson's plan. Thredson, noticing that something is up, tracks her outside to a waiting taxi. Looking back at him, she holds the tape up to the window and gives him her middle finger before the taxi drives away.
When Thredson returns home to his apartment, Lana confronts him with a gun. She says she has given the tape to the police and that they'll be coming for him soon. He responds that he is relieved and tired of living with his murderous secrets. He makes a martini while they're waiting, Lana's aim trained.
2012
Johnny finishes his "meal". Pandora says she thinks he has a Mommy-fixation, but he clarifies that his fixation is specific: he feels abandoned by his estranged mother (Lana) .
Disturbed by Johnny's violent emotional outbursts at the recollection of his mother's actions - i.e., supposedly refusing to breastfeed him and murdering his father - Pandora tries to console him, but only increases his anger. She offers both her other breast and sexual intercourse in an attempt to defuse him, but at her innocent claim that she is "bursting out of [her] skin" he snaps and begins to throttle her.
1965
Lana wants to know what happened with Wendy, and what he did with her. Turning on his gas fire, Thredson admits he was going to dispose of the body following her murder, but kept it on ice - "for practice". Inexperienced in the sexual act, he attempted intercourse with the corpse in a variety of ways until, after turning her dead gaze away from him, he was finally able to climax. He disposed of the dismembered body after Lana escaped, cremating it and scattering the ashes across the nearby area.
Thredson goes to refill his drink, the police sirens wailing in the distance. He guesses that Lana will never keep the baby now that she is out of Briarcliff, so he can't expect to ever see his child. She agrees with him, revelling in the fact that he will go to the electric chair even if the baby is born. Contradicting her, he insists that he will be institutionalized as a "clearly insane" killer, and live a long life under care. Reaching casually for a gun
