Dovchenko    Nato il 1º luglio 1899, Indiana Jones è un brillante professore universitario di archeologia che in varie occasioni veste i panni dell'avventuriero partendo per i luoghi più esotici della terra alla ricerca di reperti straordinari; grande è la sua fama di avventuriero/archeologo, infatti nel corso dei film molte persone che si trovano in vari luoghi del mondo sembrano conoscere bene il "Dottor Jones". Il nome completo di Indiana Jones è - come si apprende nel terzo film Indiana Jones e l'ultima crociata - Henry Walton Jones Junior (Henry Jones Senior è il padre, a sua volta famoso archeologo). L'archeologo tuttavia non sopporta l'essere chiamato col proprio vero nome. Il soprannome di "Indiana" nella finzione deriva dal nome del cane che aveva quando era ragazzino (mentre nella realtà era quello del cane di George Lucas). Il personaggio ha i requisiti dell'eroe dalla doppia vita, dato che veste i panni del rispettabile e pacato professore di archeologia durante le lezioni al college, per lasciare posto all'occorrenza all'alter ego di Indiana Jones, cacciatore di tesori che gira il mondo alla ricerca di eccezionali reperti e sempre nuove sfide. Non è tuttavia un eroe dotato di poteri sovrumani e non è privo di difetti (ad esempio ha una fobia per i serpenti). Il regista Spielberg volle conferire al personaggio una personalità a tratti infantile, per far sì che potesse risultare meno monotono quando veste i panni del professore e per le varie sfumature del suo carattere che lo rappresentano: romantico e cinico con atteggiamenti che ricordano quelli di un lupo solitario, cacciatore di tesori, detective incallito, eroe umano e patriota americano. Il personaggio di Indiana Jones rispecchia alcuni aspetti autobiografici del regista, come il fatto di non avere avuto una figura paterna al proprio fianco, sviluppando così un rapporto conflittuale con il padre Henry Jones Senior (interpretato da Sean Connery nel terzo film della serie)..............
