I used the freeware applications; Audacity and VirtualDub to edit, restore video and audio for these episodes on a PC. I have no need for a Mac.
These ones have less pixellation than the readily-available originals. There is still some, but far less than the originals have.
I removed the hissing/buzzing from the original mono recording, added bass where needed and upped the volume when it was too low.
I edited out the bad bits at the beginning and end of both videos to make these versions run more naturally, as an episode should.
I removed the graininess (snow) from the video, altered brightness, hue, saturation and colour on the videos to make flesh tones appear more natural (they looked all pink/purple on the originals due to the mono tape recording it was done on and the fact that the 'originals' were 2nd, 3rd or even 4th generation mono VHS recordings!!!) That combination of HELL makes wavy coloured lines all over the place, most of those are gone on my edits. When I remove grain from a 1st generation Mono or stereo vhs recording, it is VERY noticable - the improvement is. But, on these edits, it will be harder to spot 'unless' you watch the original at the same time as the edit I made. This is why I included the original versions with my restored versions. You can choose to not download the original versions if you wish, in Utorrent just simply un-tick them before you click the download to start on it.
Download one of my recent 'Strange World' episodes to see how good those 1st generation stereo vhs restored episodes are, there was HEAPS of grain on those from the old vhs tapes - you will see none on that, it is as if it were SDTV quality - the result is. These Red Dwarf ones will not get that good due to the bad quality of the original tapes that someone badly captured from 3rd or 4th generation MONO VHS tapes and uploaded onto the internet as a small file causing further degradation via compression causing pixellation.
I included the originals, untouched just as I got them when I downloaded them, so you people can judge for yourselves which versions you prefer.
Please do not complain about the quality, I was just trying to help. Plus, these are for free.
If you want better quality, restore the video/audio from the originals yourself then upload them to us all.
Or find the original Red Dwarf US pilots tape and make an uncompressed capture of it on an SVHS VCR - I will download it then actually have SOMEthing of HQ to work with.
