Apple to Be Punished Again for Ebook Cartel
The company is now facing the price for refusing to admit that it did something wrong: namely, ran an illegal pricing cartel in order to jack up the price of electronic books. Although all of Apple’s co-conspirators have already confessed and paid a reduced fine, the company for some reason cannot give up and admit that what it did was illegal. The problem is that Steve Jobs believed that it was right and his company cannot face the reality where he might have been wrong, even though he’s already dead.
Court Ruled MegaUpload Founder Can Have His Property Back
The High Court in New Zealand has finally delivered its decision, saying that police may not keep possession of assets seized more than two years ago on Kim Dotcom’s mansion. In other words, a potential appeal aside, MegaUpload founder may soon be reunited with his millions of dollars in cash, luxury cars, artwork, and other assets the police seized after the raid.
Japanese Court Rejected MtGox Bankruptcy Protection
Once the largest Bitcoin exchange across the globe, MtGox is now likely to be liquidated, because a Japanese court recently denied it bankruptcy protection.

Assets of MtGox are expected to be sold off in order to pay part of its creditors, including those who had accounts on the site. Of course, it is clear that any creditor will recoup much less than their initial stake, even despite the fact that it is unknown yet how much the infrastructure of the company, including the intellectual property like the MtGox brand, is worth.

It seems that the social network is ready to launch a money transfer service in Europe which would allow Facebook to compete with the likes of Western Union, while providing users the option to store money with Facebook or buy items online.
Gmail Officially Scans Your Emails
Google has recently clarified its email scanning practices by updating its Gmail terms of service to inform users that all emails are analyzed by automated software. In other words, the company explicitly states that Google’s system scans the content of emails stored on its servers or sent and received by any Google email account. Of course, this practice has seen Google face criticism from privacy action outfits and lawsuits from the education sector.
Google Forces Websites to Encrypt
According to the recent news, the tech giant might tweak its search algorithm in favor of encrypted websites in order to encourage better online security. The idea was revealed by Matt Cutts, an engineer in charge of liaising with site designers and minimizing spam in search. He explained that if everybody adopted encryption, the third parties would face difficulties in spying on Internet users. An engineer emphasized that encouraging encryption was very important: once websites had been hacked, Google won’t be able to find out exactly how it happened.
Hacker’s Conviction Thrown out
Hacker Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer admitted that his lawyers were racing to get him out of prison after a circuit judge had vacated his conviction. A self-described online troll and hacker was found guilty 17 months ago in conspiracy to gain illegal access to AT&T public servers after obtaining thousands of email addresses of iPad owners. At the moment, the hacker is serving his 41-month federal prison term in Pennsylvania.
UK Law Enforcement Sent 2,000 Data Requests to Facebook
Facebook admits that over 2/3 of requests in the last six months of 2013, related to criminal cases, caused the release of content. The British police made thousands of requests for information on Facebook users in second half of 2013, or at least that’s what Facebook says on public.
