40% of Internet Users Suffered from Online Harassment
The results of the recent survey showed that almost 3/4 of the US Internet users claimed they have witnessed online harassment. 40% said they experienced it themselves. It was found out that young adults are most likely to have witnessed and experienced harassment on the Internet. Women aged 18-24 have experienced it disproportionately in comparison with other demographic groups.
New iCloud Threat Revealed
Following the reports of a concerted effort to steal passwords and other sensitive information from people using iCloud in China, Apple has recently issued a new security warning for users of its popular online storage service.
Australia Wants to Audit Tech Giants over Taxes
Australian Greens are urging the local financial services watchdog to audit foreign tech giants like Facebook who allegedly avoid scrutiny via a tax loophole. Indeed, Facebook Australia hasn’t lodged annual accounts over the last 5 years. The company points out that under the “financial relief orders” smaller enterprises are exempt from having to file reports. This may sound strange for the operation being part of one of the largest companies in the world.
Ireland Will Fight with Tax Arrangement
The country has officially announced it would address the “double Irish” tax scheme. The latter has enabled major tech giants, including Apple, to dramatically cut down their tax bills. It also helped multinationals to move their taxable revenue from an operating company in Ireland to an Irish registered entity in an offshore tax haven.
Dropbox Claimed Its Logins Were Not Hacked
The file-storage service has denied claims that 7 million usernames and passwords have been stolen by the hackers, who were then threatening to leak them online. The hackers posted a few hundred usernames and passwords on the text-sharing site Pastebin. The cyber attackers claimed that it was just a small portion of the 7 million logins stolen directly from the Dropbox servers. The Bitcoin “donations” were demanded from the netizens to release the rest of the stolen data.
UK Is Seriously Worried about Cybercrime
Many UK citizens have become victims of cybercrime, including identity theft, hacking or abuse on social media. The losses of the country from online fraud exceeded £670 million per year (this is given that many cases go unreported), with the true cost likely to be much higher.
Google Changes Its Search Algorithm to Fight Piracy
Google is going to introduce some changes in its search engine. They are supposed to make sure that some of the piracy services are less likely to appear in the results of searches for music, movies and other copyrighted material.
Kim Dotcom Lost Appeal to Hollywood Studios
MegaUpload founder will have to reveal the amount of his assets after losing a bid to keep the information about how much money he has from five Hollywood studios. Kim Dotcom, currently facing extradition to the United States over alleged copyright violation, tried to appeal a decision of a New Zealand high court, which previously required him to disclose the amount of his worldwide financial assets to the entertainment industry.
Warner Bros. Revealed Its Content Strategy
The company has recently outlined an aggressive content strategy for the Warner Bros. Studio, mainly aimed at increasing profits. The Studio announced a bold expansion of the industry’s broadest theatrical slate, focused on the largest and most important global franchises.
Danish ISPs Will Voluntarily Block Pirate Sites
